Purpose of Job:

To utilize classroom management skills and strategies to aid in the transportation of students.

Primary Job Duties/Responsibilities:  The following duties are normal for this job.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned as needed.

General Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Apply classroom management skills and strategies to promote a safe and positive bus ride
  • As the bus is an extension of the classroom setting, support expectations for bus behavior that parallel classroom expectations
  • Utilize appropriate, positive student/teacher relationships to promote respect for self, peers, and driver
  • Meet the bus driver at a designated area at the scheduled time
  • Assist in orderly loading/unloading of students
  • Make sure students are seated on the bus any time the bus is in motion
  • Ensure that students are silent at all railroad crossings
  • Monitor students at all times for medical and/or behavioral problems
  • Deal with children in a firm, fair and friendly manner.
  • Any excessive misbehavior shall be reported to the teacher and/or principal.
  • The bus monitor does not have the authority to discipline students, but is expected to help maintain order and to appropriately intervene as needed to ensure the safety of all students
  • Assist driver in documenting student misbehavior that requires reporting to the school or district level
  • Report any incidents that require child restraint for safety reasons to the Director of Operations immediately
  • In the event of an absence, contact driver and Director of Transportation prior to the time of the route

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Project a positive image of the LSSD at all times
  • Keep information confidential concerning school business
  • Act in a professional manner at all times
  • May operate a motor vehicle to conduct various work activities
  • Successful completion of Criminal Justice fingerprint/background process and drug screen
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • High school diploma
  • Must be sensitive and responsive to the needs of children and their parents
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Be of good moral character
  • Be free of any felony criminal record
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Director of Operations or Director of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable

Abilities/Physical Requirements

May require moderate lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant finger dexterity.  This position is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
