Purpose of Job:
|
To promote and enhance the educational process by maximizing the health and well being of school age children and adolescents physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and developmentally through implementing the standards of school nursing practices established by the profession.
|
Primary Job Duties/Responsibilities: The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned as needed.
|
General Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Provide healthcare assistance to well children and children with acute and chronic illness, injury, handicapping conditions, and developmental disabilities
- Assume primary responsibility for medications given at school
- Assume primary responsibility for providing emergency care, illness and injury prevention
- Provide direct nursing care to all students with health needs
- Assume responsibility of school wellness, health promotion, and counseling services
- Provide training and supervision of personnel providing health services
- Participation in interdisciplinary team conferences with students, family, and school personnel to develop plans of care for students with special needs
- Enhance communication among parent, community, and teacher relations and interactions related to health
- Develop individual health care or maintenance plans with clients, family and school
- Consult with Physicians and health care providers regarding medications and medical procedures provided at school
- Observe and monitor students for adverse reactions and side effects to medications being dispensed
- Document pertinent medical information on students as needed
- Conduct screenings and access health status of students
- Serve as resource person in control of communicable diseases
- Interpret health data for school personnel and parents
- Monitor school’s compliance with State Health Regulations
- Teach delegated medical skills to non-nursing personnel
- Serve on School Healthy Team and on related system CSH subcommittees as needed

Other Duties and Responsibilities
|
- Project a positive image of the LSSD at all times
- Keep information confidential concerning school business
- Act in a professional manner at all times
- May operate a motor vehicle to conduct various work activities
- Successful completion of Criminal Justice fingerprint/background process and drug screen
- Communicate job vacancies, conduct interviews and make recommendations for hire to Director of Schools
- Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
|
- Graduate of an accredited Professional School of Nursing with a current Tennessee Registered Nurse License
- Educational preparation or experience shall include: 2-5 years of previous clinic experience to include procedures, CPR certifications, and basic knowledge of child growth and development, and care of children with special needs
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Nursing Supervisor/School Principal/Director of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable
[NOTE: RNs may supervise LPNs. Supervision is defined by the Tennessee Board of Nursing as overseeing or inspecting with authority. The basic responsibility of the individual nurse who is required to supervise others to determine which of the nursing needs can be delegated safely to others and whether the individual to whom the duties are entrusted must be supervised personally. Abilities/Physical Requirements
|
May require standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, lifting, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and reaching. Ability to lift students as needed. Work conditions may create exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
